The Accountant – Film Review

Where do I even begin with this movie! It isn’t very often that I highly encourage someone that they need to go see a movie, but with this one that is exactly what I’m doing. As of lately it is very rare that Ben Affleck gives a bad performance, and this one is no exception. This is without a doubt one of the best films of the year and I guarantee if you see it you will not be disappointed.

Affleck gives an incredible performance as Christian Wolff, a math genius who is a freelance accountant for some of the most dangerous people in the world. While Wolff starts uncooking the books for a new client it isn’t the money count that starts to rise, but rather the body count.

This movie manages to be very intelligent while also action packed. It gives you a lot of information in a way that makes it easy to understand, while also managing to not be boring. The movie also has several plot twists that keep you intrigued and a performance from Anna Kendrick that is much better than I expected it to be. As well as great performances from J.K. Simmons, John Bernthal, Jeffery Tambor, and Cynthia Addai- Robinson.

Suicide Squad – Film Review

Being one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, its safe to say that Suicide Squad had a lot to live up to, the question is however, did it? The answer, kind of. Was the film bad, absolutely not. Was it the greatest film DC Comics has ever put out? No. Let me explain.

First off, I will say this. Every actor in the film impressed me. Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jared Leto, and the rest of the cast all gave good performances. It was script and the story its self that I was not as impressed with.

First off, the opening. Was it necessary, probably. And I actually kind of enjoyed it because it was something different. My issue however was how long it was. I understand that there were a lot of characters and that we had to be given their backstories, well at least the casual movie goer who didn’t know them did. So in this case I will forgive them for the excessively long introduction, I just don’t want to see it again.

Second, the ending. I felt like the movie was going great up until the climax. The fight scene at the end was really cool, I just feel like it was rushed. I feel like the transition to the climax was a little forced and I would have liked to have scene more between the time they got off the wrecked plane and when they completed their original mission.

Here’s what I did like, Margot Robbie. She was amazing as Harley Quinn, and gave the best performance in the entire movie. She did a great job of going from psychotic to intelligent, and managed to make her character to look very selfless at times, and obnoxious and rude at others. Her sharp delivery of her lines was great, and enjoyed every moment she was on screen, and after leaving the movie all I could think was I want more Harley Quinn.

Overall I did enjoy the movie, there were just a few details that I didn’t, but were certainly not enough to make me completely reject the film. All I can say is that if you are a movie snob, this isn’t for you. However, if you enjoy a quirky action packed film, with great music, and fun performances, this movie is one you should definitely watch.

The Shallows – Film Review

I’m going to start my blog with one of the best films of the summer, ‘The Shallows’. The Shallows stars Blake Lively as Nancy, who while surfing on a secluded beach late in the afternoon finds herself in the middle of a great whites hunting ground, and after finding safety on a set of rocks a far swim from shore, has only hours to find her way off before the tide rises and her shelter is overtaken by water.

Its been a long time since a film has scared people away from the beach the way Jaws did. And after several Jaws remakes and the horror that was Sharknado, we finally found one. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat from the moment Nancy enters the water to the very end. I actually had to sit in my car for a few minutes before I could drive home because my heart was beating so fast. The movie is paced incredibly well, and is a solid ninety or so minute film that never feels like it is dragging. The scenery in the film is gorgeous, with the stunning shots of the beach almost making you forget that it is also a hunting ground. Almost.

The best aspect of the movie however, has to be Lively’s performance. After learning that she used the same acting coach as her husband Ryan Reynolds did for ‘Buried’ another great film that is carried entirely by one actor, I was very intrigued to see this, and Lively did not disappoint. There is one scene in particular were you don’t actually see what her character is looking at but rather are given hints of just how horrifying it is based only on Lively’s facial expression.

My only issue with the film was the look of the shark towards the end of the movie. There were times when the sharks behavior made it seem a little bit like b-rated horror flick. Aside from that however, the shark still manages to be terrifying every time you do get a glimpse of it.

Overall this film is an absolute thrill ride that keeps you guessing until the very end, with a likeable character that you want to root for, as well as incredible shots that make you both want to go to the beach, as well as never step foot in the water ever again.
